Welcome

Dear Business Owner,

Welcome to the Union Street Business Group. You are already a member just by having your business here.

A few years ago Jean Tinnea, Darryl Durden, Mike Cruz and I started the USBG as a way for businesses in the area to work together on making Union Street a vibrant and viable business district. Local graphic designer Sharon Durden designed the logo and image of the USBG. Many business owners here also live in the neighborhood and are committed to see the area thrive. If we work together sharing ideas and efforts, we can make Union street really special and lively place.

The original USBG was traditional and formal with a Board and regular meetings. This structure quickly lost steam as everyone has busy lives and commitments. Recently I was admiring the social networking website that CleanGreens Farm & Market had setup for their program. This inspired me to resurrect the USBG as a more open, egalitarian, and informal association.

We already had the domain name unionstreetbusiness.org, and the website was free to setup. The USBG is already recognized by the City of Seattle, the Seattle Police Department, the Central Area District Council and the Office of Economic Development, which gives us power as a group when speaking for our business district. The new USBG has no board or officers, everyone is an equal member. There are no dues or costs to membership except for the effort you would like to contribute. We can all pitch in our ideas and efforts as we are able. We can keep in touch and help each other out. We can have meetings if we want, and block parties, and work parties...... The more we can make happen the better our neighborhood will be for business and everyone who lives here.

Enclosed is a sticker you can use to display your membership in the Union Street Business Group. Please encourage anyone who would like to be involved to join our group. We are all in this together so let's help each other make things happen.

Grafitti paint out supplies

Hope all is well. Ted Divina has a red wagon in my cubicle that contains paint gray and beige, along with paint rollers. If you know of groups that would like to paint out graffiti, they are to call 233-7257 and pick up the paint and paint rollers at no charge. The supplies are courtesy of Seattle Public Utilities. Thanks for sharing the information.
Take care,

Ted Divina

Neighborhood Business Groups Win Funding

Maybe we should start having some meetings and think of some projects that we could find some funding for. It would be nice to have $5000 to market our neighborhood or put up some fun decorations.

From the CD News:
You'll soon see some new promotional banners coming to street poles in Madison Valley and street furniture on 12th Ave, all courtesy of the city Office of Economic Development.

Dearborn Mall - Is it a threat to small businesses and commercial development in the Central Area?

Jean suggested I post here to get people's reaction to the proposed Dearborn/Goodwill big box mall.

The Community Alliance for Responsible Development (CARD) represents over twenty neighborhood, business, and advocacy groups that are opposed to the current Dearborn Street proposal. CARD believes that the project is contrary to the goals and objectives of the City’s Comprehensive Plan, is a threat to neighborhood character and business interests, and will set an ill-advised precedent for… Continue

Meetings?

Should we start having some meetings or should we work on building up some more membership first? I have window stickers and introduction letters that I have been meaning to walk around to everyone. Does anyone want to help me spread these around and meet other business owners? My feeling is that we should include everyone from 12th to 34th and several blocks either side of Union including Cherry. This is a neighborhood thing after all.

Not sure if I'll be back from STP but call me anytime 206-505-5555. I will try to make it.

Yes that'd be fine with me - if that evening works, would a 7:30pm start time instead of 8pm work for everyone else?
